Mabel's Labels are back to school essentials for me

It's that time of year again.  As hard as I try to ignore all of the advertising, in store promotion and my calendar, there's no denying that the school year is looming around the corner.  With a new school year comes new school stuff.  Stuff that needs to find its way home for the rest of the year.

I'd first assumed that we'd outgrow name labels when the kids hit the age where they can recognize their own belongings.  Apparently not.  As they get older, things get shared.  Lots.  Things like clothes with best friends.  Things like geometry sets.  Things like snack containers.  Enter my friend Mabel!

We're going to need some Skinny Minis™ by Mabel's Labels.  These dishwasher / microwave safe and UV resistant labels have outlasted some of our lunch and snack containers.  They're fabulous for stationery supplies and especially for food containers.

Tag-mates™ are also on our list.  They're washer / dryer safe and best of all stick tight to clothing labels without ironing.  Some of the clothes are worn and faded, but the labels are still going strong!

Growing feet mean new shoes and boots too, which means new shoe labels are in order.  Some Teeny Tags™ will round things out nicely, to tack onto pencil cases, lunch kits or backpacks.  (I may place a separate Teeny Tag™ order personalized with an ICE (In Case of Emergency) phone number to hang off clothing for use as personal identification.  They also double as great ID for kiddos who are too cool to wear 411 Wristbands.)

It looks to me like I'm in the need of their Ultimate Back to School Combo!

If your kiddos are too cool for Mabel's fun designs, they can graduate to the snazzy new Stylish Scholars Combo.

I should also add that their customer service department is one of the best I've had the pleasure to deal with.  They go above and beyond to make sure you're happy with your order.

You all know that I'm a huge fan of Canada's own Mabel's Labels.   I've been writing about them here since 2007 and I was a direct sales agent with them prior to that.  So it shouldn't be a big surprise that Mabel's Labels Ultimate Back-To-School Combo is on my list of things to get before school starts.

Ordering my Mabel's Labels is one back-to-school task I actually look forward to doing!

Skinny-minis just for me!

You may recall that almost a year ago I became a Buzzmama for Mabel's Labels.

As a Buzzmama I voluntarily represent Mabel’s Labels. By sharing the conversations I have about Mabel's Labels, back to the company, I become eligible for free products.

Recently, I was delighted to find these in the mail:

They were a gift for me from the Buzzmama program!

I love my Skinny-minis and use them on everything and anything such as reusable food containers, skate guards, pens, pencils, books, electronic equipment, DVDs, USB keys and more! They are dishwasher/microwave safe, peel and stick labels. These labels are extremely versatile and long-lasting

Thank you Mabel!

Skinny-Minis™Mabel’s LabelsSkinny Minis were recently announced as an iParenting Media Awards 2009 Outstanding Product!

Kids too cool for name labels

mabel's icon on a Klean KanteenQuestion:

My child think's they're too old to have their name on their water bottle, but would like a way of easily identifying their bottle from their peers look alike bottles. (We still have some classic stickies with their name on them.)

Any thoughts?

Answer:
Simply cut the icon off the classic stickies you own. (Be sure to round the corners for longer lasting wear.) Decorate bottle as desired.

Also works with skinny-minis™.

Bonus answer:
If you have children with sibling-germ-a-phobia (as in, "Ewww, I don't want to drink from the bottle top if he's used it before, even though it's been thoroughly washed") consider taking a thin slice of the same colour label and using it to match bottles to bottle lids.

Sand toys: Marker vs Mabel's Labels

how to label bootsWhy would you use Mabel's Labels on sand toys? Aren't markers just as good for identifying plastic toys?

You be the judge. The top image is a brand new bucket, freshly labeled with a black permanent marker and a Skinny-Mini™.

how to label bootsThe bottom image is the same bucket after spending a few days in the sandbox with busy hands.

Can you see the difference?

Help! I've got more than one child!

What do you do if you have more than one child and don't want to spend a fortune on personalized labels for each one? Here are some ideas for you:

Solution A: Family name

From the FAQ on the Mabel's Labels website:

Classic Stickies

I have 2 kids, could I have half my order as "Jenny" and the other half as "Kate"?
Unfortunately we can’t split orders. But you might consider going with the family name, so everyone can share the labels.

Should you order the Classic Stickies you'll be able to give each kid their own colour (assuming you've got no more than three children).

Solution B: Give children have same initial

Skinny-Minis™If your children all have the same initial (such as Nicole, Nancy, Nathaniel and Ned) you're all set. Get the initial with your family name!

What's that? You didn't name your children with the same initial and you don't want to rename them? No worries.... we have more ideas below!

Solution C: Two children -- icon / no icon

Skinny-Minis™If you've got two children with a large age difference, you may be able to convince the older one that icons on the stickers are for little kids. Then order your labels with the family name and cut off the icon for the older child to use. The younger child will identify anything with the name and the icon to be theirs.

Skinny-Minis™Be sure to round the corners when you cut as approximated by the red lines in the image to the right.

Solution D: Two initials

Skinny-Minis™If you need labels for two children, Nicole and Mabel, you could order the label as shown to the right.

Skinny-Minis™Then for Nicole, cut off the ",M" and the icon. Be sure to round the corners when you cut as approximated by the red lines in the image to the right.

Skinny-Minis™For Mabel, you cut off the "N." Again, be sure to round the corners when you cut as approximated by the red lines in the image to the right.

Solution E: Two initals, short family name

Skinny-Minis™If you have a short family name and need labels for two children, Nicole and Mabel, you could order the label as shown to the right.

Skinny-Minis™Then cut the label in half, one for each child. Be sure to round the corners when you cut as approximated by the red lines in the image to the right.

Solution F: Multiple initials

Skinny-Minis™Use all the initials separated by a "/" for Nicole, Mabel and Tricia. No cutting required!

I hope you've found an idea in here that works for you. If you have other solutions you'd like to share, please let us know!

How do I label boots?

how to label bootsPint size boots all seem to look the same. How can you label them so it's obvious to the teachers and the children which boots belong to whom?

Here are some ideas that I've seen work (in no particular order):

  • stick Tag-Mates™ on the sizing label on the inside of the tongue of the boot
  • stick a Skinny-Mini™ on the sizing label on the inside of the tongue of the boot
  • stick a shoe label (with protective cover) on the sizing label on the inside of the tongue of the boot
  • stick a shoe label (with protective cover) on the lining on the (inside) side of the boot
  • stick a shoe label (with protective cover) into the insole of the boot (it may be difficult to see depending on the style and size of boot)
  • stick a Skinny-Mini™ on the outside on the back of the boot (shown in photo to the right)
Hope you found a solution that meets your needs!
