The end of the school year is approaching and it's time to start thinking about gift giving for your child's teacher or caregiver.

Moxie has some great posts with terrific comments about gift giving to teachers. Some of my favourite points include:

"If you really want to buy a gift, please please please no cheese balls and teacher mugs or tchochkes or ornaments. The most appreciated gifts I ever got were books, office supplies, or gift cards to Borders and Staples."
"The greatest gift your child can give is a handwritten letter -- something like, 'Ms. Maura, this is my favorite class. I really loved the project we did on X. I'm always going to remember you because of X. Thank you for teaching me X.'
"So, the best gift is cash on the barrel, closely followed by gift cards to retailers so large and ubiquitous that they are cash equivalents. So cash it is for daycare providers. I don't know what we'll do for teachers once we hit elementary school. Gift certificates to places school supplies are found, plus other stuff, sound great."
"Both schools I worked at had policies about accepting checks/cash."

Kids too cool for name labels

Question:

My child think's they're too old to have their name on their water bottle, but would like a way of easily identifying their bottle from their peers look alike bottles. (We still have some classic stickies with their name on them.)

Any thoughts?

Answer:

Simply cut the icon off the classic stickies you own. (Be sure to round the corners for longer lasting wear.) Decorate bottle as desired.

Bonus answer:

If you have children with sibling-germ-a-phobia (as in, "Ewww, I don't want to drink from the bottle top if he's used it before, even though it's been thoroughly washed") consider taking a thin slice of the same colour label and using it to match bottles to bottle lids.

My daughter's name is more than 20 characters long. Can we get labels with her full name on them? Or are we stuck using her initial and our family name?

Short Answer:

It depends on the label and how many extra characters you need.

Long Answer:

Child safety concerns when using full name

Question:

My son has a common first name, Jack. There are two other boys in his class with the same first name and the same initial for their last name, so we'd like to get his full name "Jack Scott" put on his labels. However, we'd rather not have his full name on his bag tags, which would be clearly visible to strangers.

Can I order a combo pack and have the bag tags not have the full name? Or am I stuck ordering each of the label types separately?

Do child ID wristbands work?

Question: The new child ID wristbands sound like an interesting idea, but do they work?

Short answer: Yes they do!

Long answer: We were recently out on a day trip with offspring and friends with offspring. I provided wristbands to all the kids on our group. In the event they got separated from the adults they were each instructed to find a mommy and show her their new "bracelet."

As fate would have it, we found ourselves in an area with a large play structure -- the kind that's at least two stories tall with slides and mirrors and multiple compartments into which parents are not always able to see. The kind where it's not uncommon to lose sight of your child for a couple of minutes.

Except that we lost sight of one of the children for longer than a couple of minutes. The remaining children were sent through the structure to find the missing child. No luck. A few minutes later my cell phone rang. The missing child had wandered out of the "play" area and shown a mommy their bracelet!

If you're in a situation like this, as soon as you realize a child is missing, I recommend taking your cell out of your purse / backpack / pocket, turning it to vibrate and carrying it in your hand. The ambient noise at fairs or indoor playgrounds can be so loud that it's impossible for you hear the cell phone when it rings.

Help! I've got more than one child!

What do you do if you have more than one child and don't want to spend a fortune on personalized labels for each one? Here are some ideas for you:

Solution A: Family name

From the FAQ on the Mabel's Labels website:

I have 2 kids, could I have half my order as "Jenny" and the other half as "Kate"?
Unfortunately we can’t split orders. But you might consider going with the family name, so everyone can share the labels.
Should you order the Classic Stickies you'll be able to give each kid their own colour (assuming you've got no more than three children).

Solution B: Give children have same initial

If your children all have the same initial (such as Nicole, Nancy, Nathaniel and Ned) you're all set. Get the initial with your family name!

What's that? You didn't name your children with the same initial and you don't want to rename them? No worries.... we have more ideas below!

Solution C: Two children -- icon / no icon

If you've got two children with a large age difference, you may be able to convince the older one that icons on the stickers are for little kids. Then order your labels with the family name and cut off the icon for the older child to use. The younger child will identify anything with the name and the icon to be theirs.

Be sure to round the corners when you cut as approximated by the red lines in the image to the right.

Solution D: Two initials

If you need labels for two children, Nicole and Mabel, you could order the label as shown to the right.

Then for Nicole, cut off the ",M" and the icon. Be sure to round the corners when you cut as approximated by the red lines in the image to the right.

For Mabel, you cut off the "N." Again, be sure to round the corners when you cut as approximated by the red lines in the image to the right.

Solution E: Two initals, short family name

If you have a short family name and need labels for two children, Nicole and Mabel, you could order the label as shown to the right.

Then cut the label in half, one for each child. Be sure to round the corners when you cut as approximated by the red lines in the image to the right.

Solution F: Multiple initials

Use all the initials separated by a "/" for Nicole, Mabel and Tricia. No cutting required!

End of year gift for teachers

The end of the school year is approaching and it's time to start thinking about gift giving for your child's teacher or caregiver.

Moxie has some great posts with terrific comments about gift giving to teachers. Some of my favourite points include:

"If you really want to buy a gift, please please please no cheese balls and teacher mugs or tchochkes or ornaments. The most appreciated gifts I ever got were books, office supplies, or gift cards to Borders and Staples."
"The greatest gift your child can give is a handwritten letter -- something like, 'Ms. Maura, this is my favorite class. I really loved the project we did on X. I'm always going to remember you because of X. Thank you for teaching me X.'
"So, the best gift is cash on the barrel, closely followed by gift cards to retailers so large and ubiquitous that they are cash equivalents. So cash it is for daycare providers. I don't know what we'll do for teachers once we hit elementary school. Gift certificates to places school supplies are found, plus other stuff, sound great."
"Both schools I worked at had policies about accepting checks/cash."

Removing iron-ons

Mabel's clothing labels resist the wear and tear of laundry and children beautifully! Iron-ons are the classic choice for clothing labels.

But can they be removed?

The short answer is, it depends.

Many people are able to just pull them off by picking at a corner that has come loose over time. By design, however, the iron-on label ever so slightly melts to adhere to the fabric.

If you have been aggressive with the iron (by heating longer than recommended on the package) to adhere the labels (as I was with the socks shown to the right*), you may be left with a little bit of residue on your clothing. Note that I was able to remove the name part of the label, but not the base part that melted into the sock.

Some people recommend to "Try ironing it and when it is warm ease up a corner and pull fairly hard." I understand that some people have had success with the following method:

Place a piece of parchment paper over the label and heat the label with a hot dry iron.
Remove the parchment paper.
Pull it from a corner while the label is still hot. (Be careful not to burn yourself! Use a blunt knife to do this.)
Peel label away from the clothing.
The label may break as it cools.
Repeat as necessary.

I haven't had a chance to try heating up the label and then removing the residue -- when I do I'll post back here with the results.

Alternately, one could iron a new one over the top (should the item be used by another member of your family).

Variables which may affect the ease with which labels are removed: washing in hot water, excessive washing, time, fabric (smooth cotton vs fleece).

Can you take off shoe labels?

It's well known that Mabel's Labels shoe labels are:

extra tough
extra sticky
do not rub off on socks
fit nicely into the insole of shoes, boots, skates and rollerblades and are
shipped with protective overlays to ensure durability.

But what happens if you want to take the labels OFF the shoes?

From Lady M's post "More on Mabel's Labels":

"My son outgrew his his nicely labeled shoes this week, and I wanted to return them to anonymity before giving them away to Goodwill. With only a little bit of tugging effort, I was able to remove the Mabel's Labels from each shoe, with barely a trace of stickiness left in the shoe.

The labels stayed on when they were supposed to stay on. And they came off when they were supposed to come off. I'm a fan."

Double your iron-ons!

If you're ordering iron-ons with a short name, here's a hack to consider. Get the name printed up twice on the same iron-on, with 6 or so spaces between them. (See example image to the right.)

Before applying the half-sized iron-ons to clothes:

cut the iron-on in half vertically
cut rounded corners for each half (approximated by the red dotted lines in the image to the right) Failure to round the corners will result in the iron-on prematurely lifting and peeling.
apply the half-sized iron-on as you would a full-sized one

Pros:

twice as many iron-ons for the same price!
labels fit nicely on tiny items (think infant socks)

Cons:

Will not work with long names.
Only one image per iron-on, so only 50% of your half-sized labels will have an image.
It is time consuming to cut rounded corners on the half-sized labels.
You buy fewer iron-ons which means I earn less commission! (Booooooo.)

How do I label boots?

Pint size boots all seem to look the same. How can you label them so it's obvious to the teachers and the children which boots belong to whom?

Here are some ideas that I've seen work (in no particular order):

stick Tag-Mates™ on the sizing label on the inside of the tongue of the boot
stick a Skinny-Mini™ on the sizing label on the inside of the tongue of the boot
stick a shoe label (with protective cover) on the sizing label on the inside of the tongue of the boot
stick a shoe label (with protective cover) on the lining on the (inside) side of the boot
stick a shoe label (with protective cover) into the insole of the boot (it may be difficult to see depending on the style and size of boot)
stick a Skinny-Mini™ on the outside on the back of the boot (shown in photo to the right)

But what happens when you need to wash the shoes?

We sent a pair of running shoes* through two consecutive cold water washes and both the shoe labels and the protective coatings look as good as new!

* The labels had been applied to the shoe for over one month and were securely stuck in the shoe thanks to the heat and pressure of little feet.
